how to pack a sleeping bag

I'm sick of packing up my sleeping bag

The last time we met we had just finished playing what possibly was the worst show of our careers. I don’t want to get into it just like you don’t want to tell me why your last girlfriend/boyfriend broke your heart and hates you, so let’s just all move on.

The day after the debacle we drove to Chicago to play a house show at our friend Sabrina’s house. We played at her apartment last year and it was a lot of fun so we were all pretty psyched about it. I drove the whole way and only listened to Pavement B-sides so at this point I really only have one friend left in the band. That’s Zack, and that’s because he had his headphones on the whole time. When we got to Chicago we had some time to kill. I needed some drumsticks so we went to a Guitar Center. There’s only one good thing about Guitar Center and that’s the ridiculous amount of electronic drum sets they have set up. It took me 45 minutes to make my way through the maze of sounds over to the drumstick section. I played every single electronic kit in the building (22) and don’t think I don’t know how ridiculous it looks/sounds when someone is beating the crap out of a piece of plastic with headphones on. If you were hearing what I was hearing though…let’s just say Rodeo is going to be hard pressed to find a replacement for this guy right here.

The show went really well. We played in Spider Basement 1.0, and my favorite part of the night was when we were waiting for the show to start. This hipster was listening to this awesome spoken word music that was simultaneously blowing my mind and making me hate everything about speech. I recorded my own song, and I’m sure we’ll put it up on this blog at some point. After the show, Zack tried to get the money and was confronted by a gang called the 77’s (not to be confused with the band). Between him and our friend Ellen, they beat the hair grease right out of them. At least that’s what he told me. I imagine it went something more like this:

Gang: hey bro
Zack: hello there
G: why don’t you get the fuck out of our way
Z: did you know that 9/11…
G: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Gang runs away. Zack saves the day once again.

The next morning Sabrina made us an incredible breakfast complete with fruit-filled pancakes, veggie bacon, coffee, and danishes. I saw a spider and Alex decided not to kill it, but to knock it onto the ground. It’s impossible to eat in peace when you know a spider could be on you at any moment. I helped to calm my fears by playing with the two cats as much as possible. When we left, one of the cats was just chillin on the roof. It didn’t really make any sense.

On our way to the next show in Mt. Pleasant, MI we stopped at a KFC to get our free meals (thanks Oprah!). Our nuggets were filled with so much joy when it worked. My joy-level dropped a bit when I saw the size of Zack’s piece of chicken compared to mine. Think about the size difference between my bicep and Kyle’s bicep and you’re getting close. I felt like I was eating a grilled chicken nugget, and I hate chicken nuggets.

When we got to Mt. Pleasant we had arrived early, so what else to do but play some boxball? This time around we set a current tour record by getting four (4) random people to join in, and three (3) people we knew. At one point there were nine (9) people playing a single game of boxball, the great equalizer. I was happy that there was such a cluster of people, but sad that every time I got out I had to actually wait in line for longer than 30 seconds. I’ll never be happy.

The show was awesome, and it took place in Spider Basement 2.0. At one point I realized my popcorn hair was resting in a spider web and I got goosebumps so big they looked like flesh colored peas had been glued to my arm. As usual, I had a favorite part of the night. This time, my favorite part was when my bass drum scooted an inch away from me every time I kicked it. By the end of each song it would have been easier for Alex to play it than me. I was using someone else’s drum set, and it seems like every time I do that I get burned. It’s just too tempting to not have to set up drums that I always blindly agree, and always will.

Tonight we’re playing in Bowling Green, OH. I’ve only been there once and it was on my bike trip last year. I spent probably 5 minutes in the town and all I remember seeing were 2 golf courses. I hope everyone tonight is wearing khakis and tucked in polo’s.

Cool Steve, out.

Don't doubt the 'knot.

I’m writing to you from the front seat of our tour van. Why? There’s a band playing right now that sounds like dog so I don’t want to listen to them.

The last few days have been an adventure to say the least. After the last post we played a show in Grand Rapids to about 25 people who seemed to somewhat enjoy it. I was kind of pissed that they didn’t enjoy it more because I was doing some awesome fills in between songs to test out if my drums were still working (they were). Zack kept getting mad at me because he was trying to talk but you tell me what’s more important: Zack telling people about how his glasses strap or me doing triplets with one hand so fast you would swear they were quadruplets with both hands in use. Obvious answer is obvious.

After the show we lurched on over to our friend Nicky’s house where got some mad Z’s. We woke up in the morning to a wonderful sight: pancakes, bacon, veggie bacon for the veggie-nugs, eggs, hashbrowns, coffee, and orange juice. I ate so many pieces of bacon, just ask anyone in the band. They saw me do it. The day before tour Alex watched me eat 10 pieces of bacon in one sitting while playing Dynasty Warriors and that’s a stone cold FACT. After breakfast we sat around for about 6 hours. We were trying to see how much we could piss off Nicky’s parents by hogging their living room, and I would safely say “mission complete with flying colors”. And we’re not talking about George W. Bush “I’m on a boat with a mission complete banner” status, I’m talking about GTFO of my living room status. I high-fived everyone in the band and we went to play some boxball in the park. It was awesome and I once again stayed in square 1 for 90% of the time. Our new keyboard player Kurt thought he was awesome because he made it to the king square, but as soon as that happened I behind-the-backed the ball to him and he instantly got crazy eyes. YOU’RE OUT KURT. After boxball we took turns spinning around on the merry go round. Alex and I spun Kyle around for literally 15-20 minutes and he threw up. Zack was throwing the boxball at him too, so it was a pretty awesome thing to witness. Then Kyle spun Alex around on a tire swing and Alex almost threw up but didn’t. That would’ve easily been the best day of tour had that happened.

After the shenanigans took place we met up with our friends Matt and PJ. They were going to take us on an adventure filled night, but we didn’t even know how adventureful it would wind up being. To start, I did some sick ass parkour shit all over Grand Rapids’ collective face. A cop came up to tell me to stop the foolishness but I ran up a pillar and then backflipped over him so he gave me a warning for being “way too radical”. After that we went to the biggest tire swing in Grand Rapids and pushed each other until we almost got our heads chopped off. I’m not even kidding, Alex and I almost got our noggins rocked. Then we walked around downtown Grand Rapids, got called fags more times than I can count (4), and got told to “fuck off” after telling a pair of lesbians that we’re cool with their lifestyle. Biggest “lol wut???” ever by the way. On our last trip around GR we came up to an arena where Slipknot had just finished creating the biggest JNCO-filled mosh pit you’ve probably ever seen. We saw a group of about 5 people talking to a dude near a tour bus, so we walked over to them. It was a little quiet so I said “who are you?” The ‘knot fans gave a laugh as if they thought I was kidding. DEAD SERIOUS bros. He gave me a name, and it didn’t ring any bells. He was trying to be funny though, because that wasn’t his real name. It wasn’t funny. Then he told me his name was Jim and that he plays guitar in Slipknot. He shook my hand and walked away. To say I was dumbstruck would be a lie. I was just kind of stoked that I met an awesome nu-metal bro. One of the better events of the night is when we found a bag of open Chex Mix on the ground that was 9/10 eaten.

(Chex Mix and an empty drink on the sidewalk. Keep it classy, Grand Rapids)

Matt decided to try to get people to eat it and no one was having any of it. All of a sudden after all hope was almost gone, a drunk girl came stumbling out of the bar proclaiming to the whole city how hungry she was. Matt swooped in for the kill and offered her some of the mix. She slammed her hand in there so fast that the NBA MVP voters almost changed their vote from Lebron James to “hungry drunk Slipknot fan”. On our way back to the van we saw a few orange road-block cones the size of trash cans. We totally blocked off a side street and sat back and watched the chaos ensue. Cars were freaking out and I truly believe we made at least 2 people late for an event. We capped off the night with a trip to the biggest Meijer I've ever stepped foot in.

(PJ just before getting kicked off the horse in Meijer)

The next day (today) we had a show in Lansing, MI. We got to town about 6 hours early so we decided to play a little boxball near MSU. We drew out some squares and started to get our game on. Cool Steve was getting a little sweaty so naturally I took my shirt off. I’m not one to lie, so I’ll just tell you straight up that I’ve got one of the best bodies you’ve ever seen. Top 5 if I’m trying to be humble. Lo and behold a big group of girls came up and asked me if they could touch my pecs. I told them that they could only if they made their Facebook statuses “so-and-so has seen the light and is now saved”. A quarter of MSU’s students have the same Facebook status right now.

The show was a total joke. We played a laid back but energetic set to a crowd that thought beer was going to get dumped on them if they clapped after a song. There was no more beer left at the bar because one dude drank it all. This dude thought it was hysterical to yell INDIANA between all of our songs. His band played after ours and there are no words to describe it. He was thrashing his body all over the walls/amps/drumset and the music didn’t call for that in the least. I peed my pants when (during the third song) he played a recognizable chord. The crowd all cheered and thought that was the climax so they all left.

AWESOME SHIT TOUR 2009 WHERE YOU AT!?!?

This is Cool Steve, signing off.

zack's description...

...of last night.

last night, some dudes from a parking garage called me gay for wearing a pink shirt. my shirt was maroon. some guys at a bar drinking bud light on a sunday night called us dorks for walking by. a couple of fat lesbians told us it is okay to be gay and when we agreed they told us to fuck off. and lastly, as we circled the venue in which slipknot had just played we came across a man talking to a group of fans. stephen approached him and shook his hand as the man said, "i'm jim, the guitarist from slipknot." add some road blocks, some failing automatic doors, and a giant tire swing, you have a weird and fun night in grand rapids.

Fanboys

Hey everybody. Karl here. I haven't posted yet and I think it's probably for the best. But seeing that it is "Trek Season" here in the Kammeyer camp - meaning the new Star Trek movie is going to finally be out and I am beyond elated and everything I say is either directly or indirectly related to my favorite childhood memory and I annoy the fucking piss out of everyone and write retarded long sentences. The point of all that was I wanted to share with our loyal readers that I am boiling with excitement and if you share my joy, then to let me know. You see, I'm kind of alone on this little trek/tour (see what I did there??) in my love for Star Trek and it'd be nice to see some support. I'm a real man. I mean, a REAL man. I can and often do admit my love for all things Trek and as often so Star Wars. I just finished watching the movie Fanboys for the first time. It was perfect. Every comic I love was in it as well as some special appearances. It made me cry. But I held most of it in because I would get made fun of more if they saw that, plus Kurt was asleep next to me and I'd rather not wake him up. So, that's pretty much it. I'm so fucking stoked for this movie and I hope you give it a chance. It looks like alot of fun. That's all. Bye.

I'm back, not black

Welcome back, www.tourblogdogblog.blogspot.com readers, to an event that can be described but never understood, watched but never fully comprehended, and enjoyed but always underpaid. This is of course, touring.
We’ve been on the road for just over 24 hours and already I’m reminded why I love being on tour. So far we’ve:

-Danced in a Mexican restaurant with Mexicans
-Watched a saxophone solo in a garage
-Beaten Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time in under 30 minutes

Last night we played a show in Winona Lake, IN with some of our friends Kill And Eat. We pulled up to the venue to find out it was in someone’s garage, which is always (usually) (sometimes) good news. This time was one of the “always”. It was a somewhat small but receptive crowd, and we all had a great time playing. Our set was, dare I say, flawless, and Winona Lake was officially “Rodeo’d.” You’d be hard pressed to find a citizen of the town that isn’t still talking about our show, and that’s the norm.

After the show we headed out with our friends, the white Grant Hill, and Caleb. They took us to an authentic Mexican restaurant where I ate two tacos and then we all wowed the patrons with our dancing skills. By wowed I obviously mean confused. They served us chips and salsa and the chips were more like wheat thins than chips.

After the dining experience we headed to Grant Hill’s house where we played video games and hung out for a while. Did you know that Grant Hill was in the movie American Teen? If you look at the DVD case he’s on the back sporting a classy but fun green suit. He loves talking about his experience, and you should definitely ask him about it. His sister and her boyfriend (?) came home late at night mad drunk. He was convinced that cranberry juice was a diuretic, and we had a hell of a time acting like we thought diuretic and diarrhea were the same word. He got mad, called people bitches, punched the girl, and told me to Google something without internet access. It was a lot of fun, and I hate him.

This morning we woke up to a fest of French (freedom) toast, cereal, orange juice, bananas, and weird cookies. I ate so much food and Grant Hill chastised me for taking two slices of toast. Sorry Grant but a man’s gotta get his eat on. I know you tried to box me out but height and weight allowed me to prevail this time.

After food we hung out for a good while, I ate 4 “fun size” bags of chips, which by the way, aren’t fun at all. Fun to me is eating an entire bag of chips in one sitting. They should call those “settle for this” size. After I ate each bag I hid the remains and left them in a spot that Grant will probably find in a few weeks. Ants and bugs will probably find the crumbs first, and I’m looking forward to getting that nasty email regarding my dickhead move.

We left Grant’s house and now we’re in Grand Rapids, MI sitting in a coffee shop, stealing their bandwidth. I made $8 on ChaCha and I’m feeling pretty good about that. Dragonforce is playing here tonight and I’m not worried about them stealing our crowd. If they think the novelty of their band hasn’t worn off yet, then they’re probably still wearing Soap shoes and riding Razor scooters.

Until next time,
Cool Steve out.

Pool's Closed

Hey www.tourblogdogblog.blogspot.com fans, it’s Cool Steve again. I’ve been in constant nap mode since my last blog and therefore don’t have that much to tell you. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened, mostly just girls still asking me to take my shirt off and me obliging. God gave me this body for a reason and if there’s one thing I know about God it’s that he loves it when you show off the presents you were given. That’s why I showed everyone my new iPod that I got for Christmas.

We played an awesome show in Orlando at a coffee shop. Our good friend Steve (Moor Hound) opened up the show and I say this in all seriousness; you need to check him out. Everything he does is inappropriate. We played a killer set and I was singing some awesome harmonies behind the kit. Too bad there wasn’t a mic back there, I guarantee we would’ve seen a jump in CD sales. Speaking of mics, I hate it when people talk about microphones and abbreviate it “mike”. Just because spell check doesn’t put a red line underneath names doesn’t mean you’re shortening words correctly.

After the show we went to a girl’s dorm room and stayed the night. It was pretty uneventful if you call me getting 3 invitations to sleep in girls’ beds uneventful. I declined because they had the internet there and I love the internet more than I love impressing people with my make-out skills. The next morning our host took us to the mess hall where we shoved bagels and bananas in our pockets because we’re on tour and that’s what you do on tour. You steal things. You take things that originally cost money and make them cost nothing.

After Orlando we headed to a suburb of Atlanta, GA where we played a most excellent house show. It was the best show of tour so far. After we played, an inebriated high school girl told me I was hot and cute. I told her that her roots were showing and she cried. Post-show, we headed to Alex’s uncle’s house where our minds were blown. He had BEER IN HIS FRIDGE. He also had a pool table, big screen TV, a tanning bed, GUNS, ski-ball, a king sized bed, batting cages, and a trampoline. Frank read a book most of the time.

After Atlanta we headed to Asheville, NC where we played a show that I don’t really remember with a band that was really good. I parked on an awesome incline in a really thin alley and I put on the parking brake so well. You should've seen it. Everyone in the area knew our van wasn't going anywhere. On the topic of the word “brake”, I really hate it when people type the word “break” when they mean “brake”. Just because spell check doesn’t put a red line under the word that is describing what you’re about to do doesn’t mean you’re spelling correctly.

We drove to Tennessee that night and stayed in these really cool dorms that Alex blogged about below. My favorite part of the night was when I set my sleeping bag down on my bed and saw a marshmallow next to the wall with dust on it. My second favorite part of the night is when I laid down in my bed and saw crackers underneath Alex’s bed. The next morning we woke up and grubbed out so hard. I put a green bean in my cereal because I thought it was Frosted Flakes and when I took a bite I realized it was Corn Flakes. A bowl of cereal has never deserved a green bean more.

Our last show of tour was tonight and took place in a town so small in Tennessee that not even it’s own residents know the name of it. I know this because I asked a lady at a gas station where we were and she stared at me like she had just seen a black man win the presidency. I knew this show would be awesome because I got to use a drum set with a double bass pedal. It’s been a secret fantasy of mine to spice up Rodeo’s songs with some unnecessary double bass so that’s exactly what I did. People in the crowd got so stoked and started cheering and I’m on eBay right now looking for my own pedal so I can start doing it on a constant basis.

After we played, this awesome nu metal band performed and it blew my mind because I didn’t even know those existed anymore. It was like stepping back into the year 2001 and you better believe I moshed my JNCO’s off. We are about to head back to Indiana right now and that means the end of me blogging. It’s been really fun though, and I’m kind of glad it’s coming to a close because in case you couldn’t tell, I’m running out of funny things to say. In all seriousness though, this was the best tour I’ve ever been a part of, hands down. The shows weren’t always that great or even good, but I got to almost kiss so many girls that that didn’t even matter. Until next time, Cool Steve out.
